In November of 1985, God saved and set apart for Himself, Vince P. Hairston, with a calling on his life to pastor. In January of 1988, Vince was licensed as a minister, preaching his initial sermon at his home church, Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Cascade, Virginia. During his college years, he grew and developed through the ministry of Evangel Fellowship Church of God in Christ pastored by Elder Otis Lockett. In January of 1990, Vince joined Mount Zion Baptist Church, and continued his spiritual pilgrimage under the watchful eye of Bishop George Brooks. In July of 1992, he was ordained to the work of the gospel. Vince joined the staff of Mount Zion in June of 1993, and later became Pastor of Adult Ministries. God used this time to teach and perfect the talents and abilities He had placed within him.
Seven years later, in September of 2000, the winds of change began to blow in Vince’s life. God began speaking to him and confirming that now was the time for him to come forth to shepherd His flock. “Calvary Christian Center” was the name for the ministry given to Vince by God many years ago. “REAL Ministry for REAL Life for REAL People” is the motto that describes Calvary. With the prayer, planning and sacrificial giving of a core group of 7 individuals, (Ronald and Stella Timmons, Calvin and Sandra Foster, Keith Funderburk and Vince and Cheryl Hairston) the vision began to take physical form.
The inaugural services were held at The Canterbury School on January 7, 2001. God grew and prospered Calvary at its initial location for 19 months. In September of 2002, God led us to 200 Florence Street in Historic Fisher Park in downtown Greensboro. With space that was exceedingly and abundantly above all that we could have asked or thought, we held our first service there on September 7, 2002. Six months later, on March 28, 2003, Calvary “possessed the land”, with the purchase of 811 Jefferson Road, our church home with three buildings and six acres of land. The vision for Calvary was never limited to one location. From the beginning of the ministry, God had ordained that through Calvary would come many other ministries to help in the end time harvest. God continues to show Himself faithful and mighty in the process of raising up laborers to bring in the harvest.
On April 2, 2006 Calvary Christian center planted its first seed church – Calvary Christian Center East in Cone Elementary School, located in northeast Greensboro. H. Rashard Jones was chosen as the pastor. Prior to becoming Pastor of Calvary East, Rashard was the assistant pastor of Calvary Christian Center. In January of 2008, Calvary East became and independent, autonomous body. In January of 2009, Calvary Southwest was planted in southwest Greensboro and Reginald King was chosen as the lead pastor. Prior to becoming the Lead Pastor of Calvary Southwest, Reggie was the youth pastor of Calvary Christian Center. In the years to come, this process will be replicated over and over again until that day when the trumpet shall sound and we that remain shall be caught up to meet Him in the air.
